Jennifer Young
Jennifer Young has been writing stories and articles for pleasure for as long as she can remember and has recently become a published writer, with stories in The People's Friend (one of the UK's most popular women's magazines) and The Lady magazine. This summer she won a weekly travel writing competition in The Daily Telegraph. At Edinburgh University, Jennifer wrote news and features for the student newspaper and was Highly Commended in the Scottish Student Press Awards; she also edited the award-winning newsaper. She won the university's Grierson Verse Prize. Since then she has written copiously, and is an active member of various writers' groups.
At university, Jennifer studied geography, a subject which allowed her to indulge in many of her interests at an academic level - history, travel, the physical Earth and even literature all formed part of her course. She subsequently went on to complete a Master's degree in Tourism at Strathclyde University before being employed for over ten years as a leisure and tourism consultant - a job involving researching, assessing and identifying the potential for tourism development in both individual attractions and wider areas throughout the UK.
While bringing up children, Jennifer somehow found time to indulge in a wide range of interests, from mineralogy to European history, the environment to polar exploration. She also undertook a BSc in Geosciences through the Open University, covering such topics as geology, oceanography, climate change and the history of science. The degree involved completion of a 5,000 word dissertation on the subject of earthquake prediction.
Jennifer lives in Edinburgh, arguably Scotland's most beautiful and historic city. In the course of her work and leisure she has travelled extensively in Scotland and the rest of the United Kingdom, especially the Highlands and Dumfries and Galloway. Her hobbies are reading (on a variety of subjects), watching sport, especially cricket, and cycling - a wonderful way of exploring Edinburgh and its surroundings.
